GENERAL INFO

Komodo & Sandalwood are probably the two most well-known things about this province. But East Nusa Tenggara, once colonized by the Portuguese, has so much more to offer. Traveling to the interior of this province is every adventurer/traveler’s dream, because of the different beauty it offers, the variety of unique traditions, the simplicity and friendliness of its people, and the richness of marine life that inhabits the waters around its islands, all making this province very interesting to be your next travel destination.

“Going here (East Nusa Tenggara) is an adventure in itself,” said Chris Burch, founder of the famous fashion label Tory Burch, in Vanity Fair magazine. Those of you who live in Europe or America must fly to Hong Kong or Singapore first, then Bali, and continue the short journey by plane to the airport in Labuan Bajo or Tambolaka in Sumba. East Nusa Tenggara Province consists of more than 550 islands, with the main islands being Flores, Sumba and Timor. Unlike the neighboring province of West Nusa Tenggara, the majority of the population here is Catholic and the culture is heavily influenced by the Portuguese, with their heritage still easily visible. Although only part of it is under Indonesian control, the island of Timor, where the provincial capital of Kupang is located, is arguably the most densely populated of all. Flores (bunga in Portuguese), an elongated island with many volcanoes, displays dramatic views and impenetrable plains, so it is no wonder that the island is divided into several districts with their own cultures and languages.

Visiting this province will make you feel like you are in another world because of its extraordinary nature; from its charming beaches to its challenging topography, cultural diversity, to the presence of Komodo dragons since prehistoric times. The natural beauty that is still pristine makes this province very amazing and a must-visit for every traveler.

Flores Island
This country is very beautiful to explore. Island. Flores Island is an exotic place, This island has a strong ethnic touch with typical tribal civilization work, beautiful natural settings, there are towering volcanoes, colored crater lakes, forests, beautiful marine gardens with white sand beaches, and giant prehistoric animals too. One of the most beautiful volcanoes is the Kelimutu caldera in Central Flores, with three colored lakes. There are 14 active volcanoes in Flores, the highest peak (The 2400m Mount Ranaka). Physically, the people on the western tip of the island are more Malay, while others in the Flores habitat are more Melanesian. The island with a population of 1.5 million people is divided into five main linguistic and cultural groups. About 85% of the population is Catholic, but in rural areas especially, Christians are divided into traditional beliefs. Animist rituals are still important here for various events, from births, marriages, and deaths to building new homes, or to mark important points in the agricultural cycle. Muslims tend to congregate in coastal towns such as Ende where they make up half the population. Flores is part of the province of East Nusa Tenggara. The island is divided into eight regencies (district governments), from west to east these are: West Manggarai, Manggarai, East Manggarai, Ngada, Nagekeo, Ende, Sikka and East Flores. Good places for snorkeling and diving are several locations along the north coast of Flores, especially Maumere and Riung. West Flores is also the best place for ecotourism, trekking, hiking and bird watching.
